When the U.S. entered WWII, nylon was diverted to the military for parachutes, rope, and gear. Silk imports collapsed, and suddenly stockings vanished from the shelves. But fashion norms didn’t disappear, and in the workplace many women were still expected to look “proper.” So they improvised: leg-makeup creams, tinted powders, and even DIY mixes like tea or cocoa. Some products came with a tiny pencil so women could draw a perfect “stocking seam” up the back of the leg. Friends often helped each other get the line straight.
