description:
During the Korean War, U.S. and UN forces blasted surrender appeals, emotional messages, and psychological pressure across the front using giant loudspeakers. But did any of it actually work? Surprisingly—sometimes, yes. About 80% of literate Chinese and North Korean POWs later reported hearing these broadcasts. The most effective messages were the human ones: promises of warm food and fair treatment, or emotional calls from “mothers” urging soldiers to come home. These hit hard, especially in freezing conditions or during chaotic retreats. Other messages? Confusing, overly American in tone, or filled with metaphors that didn’t translate. Those failed completely. Loudspeakers weren’t magic—but used alongside leaflets and safe-surrender instructions, they became a real psychological warfare tool on the Korean front.
