  • description: Did the Korean War mark a new era of press freedom — or just World War II–style censorship dressed up as “guidelines”? Early on, it looked freer. With no formal censorship board in 1950, reporters moved across the frontlines and filed uncensored stories. But when negative coverage hit — chaotic retreats, collapsing morale, leadership failures — the U.S. military reacted fast. MacArthur’s HQ imposed “voluntary” censorship that wasn’t voluntary at all. Public information officers screened stories, spiked sensitive dispatches, and blocked anything that could embarrass commanders or reveal setbacks. Journalists who pushed too hard risked losing access — or being kicked out entirely. Even major operations, like the months-long blockade of Wonsan, were kept under tight wraps. Korea didn’t kill press freedom… but it didn’t liberate it either.
