  • description: When South Korea’s forces retook territory during the Korean War, the violence didn’t stop at the front lines. Tens of thousands of civilians accused of aiding the North were executed — often without trial. The most infamous case was the Bodo League Massacre in mid-1950, a government-led purge that killed tens of thousands of South Koreans before the North’s invasion even reached them. Similar atrocities followed in Geochang, Ganghwa, Sancheong, and Goyang, carried out by local forces with almost no oversight. For decades, the South Korean government denied these killings. Only in the 2000s did an official Truth and Reconciliation Commission confirm what survivors had long claimed.
