description:
The Korean War wasn’t just a clash of armies—it was a war filled with tragedy. One of the darkest moments came at No Gun Ri in July 1950, when U.S. troops opened fire on South Korean refugees—many of them women and children—killing over a hundred people, possibly many more. Commanders claimed they feared North Korean infiltrators among fleeing civilians, but survivors told a different story. And No Gun Ri wasn’t the only case. During the war’s chaotic early months, panicked soldiers and unclear orders led to more civilian casualties, napalm attacks, and mass bombings of northern towns. In our linked Short, we explore another part of the Korean War’s grim reality: How U.S. air power and napalm shaped the conflict.
